7 Visits to the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection presents seven self-portraits in the form of visitor badges. Organized chronologically, the badges document the artist’s engagement with artists’ books. The book folds out to reveal an enlarged photograph along with the titles of the artists’ books which were viewed during these visits.
The image quality of the photographs along with the data about the subject’s identity and whereabouts unmistakably place the book in a context of surveillance that feels at odds with the mundane, even innocent act of reading. Though the book is lighthearted and self-referential, it nevertheless raises concerns about that surveillance has reached into even the most innocuous parts of our lives.
